Wow–this is still here

Just a quick note to say that I’m surprised that my scrawlings of over three years ago are still here on the net. Who would have believed it? Certainly not me, but then as I’m the only person who reads these, I don’t really care. Still – exciting, isn’t it?

It’s a sad day

Today marks the last day of what has been my regular lunchtime haunt for the last 16 weeks. Next week is my last week in Sheffield and sadly, the sandwich shop Charlies is closed all next week. So I went along this lunchtime for my last taste of Sheffield this lunchtime and I had a 'seafood' salad sandwich which consists of prawns and 'crab'. Although this is not really crab, this is crabsticks and they have not even been waved in the direction of a crab never mind actually being made out of one. I keep meaning to take it up with them. I keep meaning to point out that their advert for a 'Crab Sandwich' is actually a violation of the trade descriptions act. Still, what do you expect in Sheffield? So I had my last sarnie and can of coke. No idea what we'll do for lunch next week. Aside from Wednesday. My agent is coming to take us all out on Wednesday for lunch.

Little V2.0 was supposed to be going on first trip to the coast today with my mum and sister, but my mum has come down with a flu this morning. So I've decided that I'm going to take Mrs. R. and V2.0 to the coast on Sunday and we're going to have a picnic on the beach. Even if it's cold and raining.

Jaffa Cakes

There's a guy that sits in front of my desk and each morning he brings in a packet of different cakes, biscuits or pies. Up until recently his favourite breakfast of choice was a tray full of Sainsbury's home-brand apple pies. He's also snacked on an entire Victoria sponge cream-cake like it was a large sandwich. Today he's brought in a packet of Jaffa cakes. Yes – they are officially cakes and not biscuits and they taste scrummy. I could not resist getting one off him and having one with my coffee. Oh taste that orange goodness…

Star Wars and all that...

I can't believe that it's been 30 years since the first Star Wars film was released. Wow – that makes me feel old. Is it really 30 years since a I sat in a cinema (in Bridlington, of all places) and watched that massive Star Destroyer come rumbling over the top of screen. I don't remember what my reaction was at the time, but I can imagine it something like an astounded stare with mouth slightly open voicing a silent 'wow' as this space ship seemed to go on forever. Then there were lasers, and robots and a big bad guy in a black suit. I can remember thinking that this was going to be a whole lot better than the Close Encounters of the Third Kind film I saw last week. It was. I was gripped. Maybe that was a life changing moment for me. I think at that point I wanted to know about robots and space and computers and… wow, the future was cool and I wanted to be there. That was all thirty years ago – I can't believe it.

One of my favourite magazines, Wired, has a whole stack of articles that cover the anniversary including the guy who has a complete warehouse full of Star Wars memorabilia (there had to be one out there somewhere and it's no surprise to me that he's American!). This guy has spent the last 30 years collecting this stuff and now he works for George Lucas himself as some kind of fan promoter of the franchise. Talk about a guy with a dream job. I bet he loves every minute of it.

Meanwhile, back on this planet and in this time, I'm facing another birthday. Facing a birthday – yes, I think I've got to a certain age when the milestones are not so much to be celebrated as to be quietly glossed over. Mrs. R. has been very generous and bought me a fantastic new lens for my camera. I've been wanting it for ages and I can't wait to start taking some pictures with it. The actual day is on Saturday and the only celebration I have in mind so far is a meal out tomorrow with Mrs. R. and we're going to a friend's house on Saturday for a 'Ready Steady Cook!' style competition at which I shall be making the dessert course. I have something in mind. It consists of a light chocolate sponge, into which cherry brandy is drizzled. Then a layer of cooked cherries and fresh cream, another chocolate sponge and finally a dusting of icing sugar. Sort of small Black Forrest Gateaux's – they should be good.

Little V2.0 is growing up fast. She has two small teeth coming through her bottom gum. She is such a charmer these days and I think she has a bit of a thing for her dad as she's always smiling when I arrive home from work. It's a regular treat for me. You get excited about the smallest of things when you have a small baby. Such as the fact that they have started to pick things up with their fingers rather than just grabbing at them with a fist-like grip. She's starting to do all of that and its just amazing to watch her develop. She was laid on the bed this morning and holding her milk bottle by herself whilst she drank out of it. You would think we were mad to get so excited by the fact that a baby was holding its own bottle – but we do!

Work is going fine at the moment. The Sheffield job is coming to an end in a couple of weeks and I already have some more work lined up at the end of it. My next job is going to be doing some work for my old company which is nice, but it also means that I will be working from home for the next couple of months – which is excellent. It means that I will be able to walk little V2.0 up to nursery every day and that I won't be spending 2 hours a day sat behind the wheel of a car in heavy traffic – like I do now. The work is also going to be quite interesting and there are opportunities for me to pick up some extra skills and maybe even some extra revenue at the end of it. We will have to see how it goes!

That's all for now.
